Do I need to replace my Door Gearbox?
A gearbox, known as a centre case, is the central locking component of a Multipoint Door Lock. Because this is the most used section of the lock, it is also the most likely part to fail. When people encounter problems with their door locks, they frequently assume that the entire lock has to be replaced. However, this is not the case, as the most typical problems with a multipoint lock are caused by the gearbox. This is because the gearbox is a complex piece of hardware with several moving parts.
If your multipoint lock has any of the following issues, it is likely that your gearbox has or will have further issues in the future.
- When moving the handle, the lock does not disengage or engage.
- The lock’s cylinder appears to be caught on something or is difficult to lock/unlock.
- The latch in your centre case is stuck open or closed.
- Excessive movement on your centre case’s hook or deadbolt.
- Handle feels loose or not sitting in its usual position.
All of the issues above can usually be resolved by moving 3–4 torx screws from the centre box and installing a new gearbox. You won’t even need to acquire a new set of keys because all your old door hardware may still be used.
What Type of gearbox do I need?
The most important element to consider when shopping for a replacement Door Gearbox is the brand. This should be clearly marked on the inside of your door’s long metal strip, such as ERA, Lockmaster, GU Fero, or Fullex. Keep in mind that some Winkhaus gearboxes cannot be replaced as they are riveted in position.
The second most important aspect is the lock size, which is commonly a 35/92 or a 45/92. The first measurement is the backset, which is the distance between the front of the lock and the spindle’s centre. The second measurement is the “PZ Centre measurement,” which is the distance between the keyway (keyhole) and the centre of your spindle.
The final crucial point to mention is the types of spindles. If your door handle is in the same position inside and outside, then you have a single spindle (which will have a spring fitted to hold the handle in place). Then again, if you have a handle that is of different heights inside and out, you have a Dual Spindle Gearbox or split spindle gearbox. Because of the extra spindle in the lock due to the additional spindle, they are frequently unsprung (this means that the spring in your door handle keeps it in place).
